Hotel Russell
Russell Square
London, UK WC1B 5BE
The Hotel Russell is a landmark historic hotel with an impressive
facade and lobby. The hotel has seven floors and is directly
located across the street from Russell Square Park in Bloomsbury
in Central London. It is about three
blocks from the British Library and is around the block from
the Russell Square subway (tube) station, which is part of a
subway line which connects directly to Heathrow Airport. A 24-hour
supermarket and HSBC branch are around the corner from the hotel
as well.
The hotel has over 300 rooms. The double room I stayed in had
modern furniture, including a bowl sink and a glass enclosed
shower in the bathroom. The walls of the room were red and white.
The bathroom and alcove entrance to the room were cut off from
the rest of the room by a solid fireproof door, and that entry
part of the room and bathroom are not air conditioned. The bedroom
part of the room was about 6'x12' and was air conditioned. The
bedroom part of the room had a medium-size closet, small refrigerator,
safe, coffeemaker, a 23" LCD TV, and complimentary coffee,
tea biscuits, and glass water bottles were provided.
The hotel has an excellent oak-paneled bar in its lobby that
serves until 1 a.m., and the bar and adjoining dining room also
serve a full English breakfast, which is included in the price
of some of the rooms or may be purchased separately. Internet
access in the hotel involves a fee (6 pounds for 40 minutes)
and computer terminals are available in a room near the lobby,
but more economical internet access is available at an internet
cafe nearby, or free wifi access is available at the British
Library if one has his or her own laptop.
If one is traveling from the USA or another country, it is
advisable to bring the proper electrical adapter/converter so
that one can plug in cell phone chargers and computers.
Hotel rates vary by night, but daily internet rates generally
vary between 79-99 pounds (approximately $150-180).
