Chiang Mai 50000
Thailand
On the banks of the Ping River, the Sheraton
Chiang Mai offers 25 stories and over 500 guestrooms. This
hotel, somewhat on the outskirts of the city, stands about a
15 minute cab ride from the airport, and 5-10 minute tuk-tuk
ride from the downtown shopping area and temples. Also close
by and accessible by a Sheraton shuttle van is the well known
night bazaar. Adjacent to the hotel, not much is available,
though there are a few tourist shops and of course, places to
get inexpensive massages.
The lobby is clean and boasts large windows,
though there is not a spectacular view and it is somewhat dark. My
friend and I were pleased to receive, upon check-in, a voucher
for a free fruit drink in the lobby bar, to which we added alcohol
for a fee. This drink came in handy, we soon discovered, when
we realized that the elevators are slow and we needed to wait
a few minutes in the lobby for their arrival. Reception
attendants and doormen are plentiful and ready to help with luggage,
tour advice and directions. Hiring a car for the day is
also easily accomplished by letting the concierge know your needs,
and rates are low and negotiable.
My room was on a high floor and had standard
accommodations -- two beds, a small table, western style bathroom
-- and overlooked the Ping River, which I found to be beautiful
in a remote sort of way. Though I found the room to be spacious,
it was rather dark and could stand to have a refurbishing. It
was clean and quiet, however, and thus served its purpose. Bathroom
amenities and a mini bar were comforting touches.
The concierge and business center attendees
are both knowledgeable and patient when it comes to deciding
among the many tours and excursions available in Chiang Mai.
For a fee, you may use the business center phones and computers. Though
nominal as well as a standard practice in Thailand, it was frustrating
when I had to make flight changes and had to sign paperwork signing
call charges to my room each of the 6 or so times we called the
airlines. For business functions, the Sheraton also has
10 meeting rooms which can be easily divided to fit your space
requirements. Two of these rooms are large ballrooms which
offer most audio-video equipment.
